|”Axis mundi (also cosmic axis, world axis, world pillar, columna cerului, center of the world, world tree), in religion or mythology, is the world center or the connection between Heaven and Earth. As the celestial pole and geographic pole, it expresses a point of connection between sky and earth where the four compass directions meet.’ Wikipedia
“Every Microcosm, every inhabited region, has a Centre; that is to say, a place that is sacred above all.”
Before we discovered the wonderful world of science, people tried to explain what was going on around them. They did not have all the facts. We don’t have all the facts even today but definitely there is more information available now. The ancient world was a world of observations, beliefs and star lore. We carry it with us today and call it different things, archaeo-astronomy, cultural astronomy and sometimes astrology. Astronomy evolved from them, and is using science to understand the Universe.
The ancients believed that from axis mundi, travel and correspondence was made between higher and lower realms. Communication from lower realms ascended to higher ones through it. Blessings from higher realms could descend to lower ones to be disseminated to all humanity. The ancients also said that axis mundi functioned as the omphalos (navel), the world’s point of beginning.
Axis mundi is a wonderful symbol and the best place to start our journey for the Milky-Way.kiwi newsletter is from it.
I was very lucky to meet Adrianos Golemis, who lives as close as you can get to axis mundi. He is currently a medical doctor at the European Space Agency’s Concordia Antarctica station. Adrianos is also a star aficionado. He writes wonderful blogs, about ‘everything Antarctica’, which are published on the European Space Agency’s page:http://blogs.esa.int/concordia/category/adrianos-golemis/ and you can also find him on twitter @astrovenator.
Adrianos featured in our Milky-Way.Kiwi Newsletters
I wish you clear skies Adrianos, wherever you are and thank you for sharing with us such amazing experiences!
